Kilkenny will announce their team later this evening for the Second Round of the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship against Galway in Pearse Stadium, Salthill on Sunday at 2.00 p.m. The Cats have four players injured following last Sunday’s opening round game against Antrim in UPMC Nowlan Park and decisions on the availability of Eoin Murphy, Mikey Carey, Eoin Cody and Adrian Mullan will exercise the minds of Manager Derek Lyng and his fellow selectors when they sit down to finalise the team later this evening.

Meanwhile the Kilkenny Minor Hurling selectors have retained the same starting 15 players that took the field last Saturday in UPMC Nowlan Park in their emphatic win over Galway to travel to Wexford Park to play Wexford in the Second Round of the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship Round-Robin series on this Saturday afternoon at 1.00 p.m..

Former Republic of Ireland centre-half Charlie Hurley has died at the age of 87. Hurley won 40 caps for Ireland between 1957 and 1969 and was considered one of the best defenders in England throughout his career, renowned for his aerial ability. Born in Cork in 1936, Hurley moved to Essex with his family as a youngster and began his football career with Millwall. He would later become synonymous with Sunderland, playing over 400 times for the Black Cats, and was named the club’s Player of the Century on the occasion of their centenary in 1979.

Boxing

Mayo’s Shannon Sweeney has qualified for the 50kg final at the European Championships in Belgrade when defeating an Armenian opponent, while Aoife O’Rourke made the middleweight decider when defeating an opponent from Turkey. But there was disappointment for Kellie Harrington and Niamh Fay. Olympic champion Harrington suffered a first defeat in three years and 32 bouts as she lost out to Serbia’s Natalia Shadrina. Fay’s run ended at the semi-final stage against a Romanian opponent who won by unanimous decision in the 54kg class.

Rugby

Co-captain Sam Monaghan returns to the Ireland team for Saturday’s final Guinness Women’s Six Nations meeting with Scotland, among three changes to the side. The second row missed out on last week’s defeat to England at Twickenham, but is reinstated, co-captaining the side alongside flanker Edel McMahon. The remaining changes come in the backline, as Enya Breen comes into the centre where she replaces Aoife Dalton, while Méabh Deely earns her first start of the championship at full-back.

Horse Racing

Willie Mullins will have a strong team running at Sandown on Saturday as he aims to become the first Irish winner of the UK jump trainer’s title since Vincent O’Brien in 1954. Ahead of the final day of the jumps season, Mullins is £180,000 ahead of nearest challenger Dan Skelton. Paul Townend will have four rides for Mullins on Saturday, with El Fabiolo leading the charge as odds-on favourite in the Celebration Chase. Townend will also ride Easy Game in the Oaksey Chase, before saddling Impaire Et Passe in the Select Hurdle and Gold Dancer in the Handicap Hurdle. Mullins will have three runners in the Gold Cup Handicap Chase in the form of Minella Cocooner, Nick Rockett and Aime Desjy. Sir Gerhard joins Impaire Et Passe in the Select Hurdle before Sa Majeste joins Gold Dancer in wrapping up Mullins’ assault on the title in the Handicap Hurdle. Should he secure the trainer’s title as expected, it will be the first time since the 2004/05 season that neither Paul Nicholls or Nicky Henderson has been the champion.

Today’s Irish racing is at Cork with an all flat card starting at 2.40 p.m. and in Downpatrick with a 4.20 p.m. start
