More rivers in central Europe have spilled their banks in flooding that has killed at least 10 people from Poland to Romania and left many towns submerged or hit by gushing, debris-filled waters after days of heavy rainfalls.

Border areas between the Czech Republic and Poland were hit hard over the weekend. Some bridges collapsed and homes were destroyed, while villages and towns in eastern Romania were submerged. Poland’s government is due to meet today to call a state of disaster.

While rivers in the Czech-Polish border area were starting to recede this morning, flooding was widening to more parts and leaving bigger cities in both countries on alert.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a message on X, sent words of solidarity to those affected by flooding and she said the EU would provide support.

A gunman attempted to assassinate Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday at Trump’s golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, authorities said.

The Secret Service said its agents were accompanying Trump on the golf course, when one who was securing holes ahead of Trump spotted a gun barrel in some bushes near the property line.

Multiple agents engaged the gunman and fired at least four rounds at him. The gunman then dropped his AK-47 style rifle, two backpacks, a Go Pro camera and other items and fled in a black Nissan car.

Palm Beach County sheriff Ric Bradshaw said a witness managed to take a photo of the suspected gunman’s car and license plate and gave it to authorities.

Shortly after, sheriff’s deputies in neighboring Martin County stopped the suspect on Interstate 95 and took him into custody.

Free public transport would be extended to all children under nine years of age under proposals being put forward by the Green Party in advance of the budget.

It is one of a number of measures for parents and children being sought by Ministers from across the Coalition as negotiations ramp up for the last budget before the general election.

Fine Gael is set to look for a further €500 cut to third-level student fees while Fianna Fáil is seeking funding for at least 1,500 extra special needs assistants (SNAs) for schools.

There will be intensive talks over the coming two weeks as Ministers seek the agreement of Minister for Finance Jack Chambers and Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe – and ultimately the Coalition leaders – for measures they want included in the budget on October 1st. The Green Party’s proposal would extend free public transport, which currently covers the under-fives, to five-, six-, seven- and eight-year-olds – a measure estimated to cost about €8 million per year.

A party source said it would save families money and encourage the use of public transport, reducing emissions and congestion.
