An 29-year-old Irish man has been found dead in a prison cell in Portugal. The man was arrested on Tuesday following an alleged assault on his partner. The woman, who was also in her 20s, was attacked and taken to hospital where she was treated for stab wounds and has since been released The couple had travelled to Albufeira to attend a social occasion earlier this week.
An Irish woman has died on the Italian island of Sardinia. Local reports indicate the woman was an Irish tourist aged in her 60s who died on Tuesday after being swept out to sea .It is the second death of an Irish person within several days on the Mediterranean island
The Taoiseach has said he is “so sorry” to victims of historical sexual abuse at schools run by religious orders, as he signalled a future State apology. Simon Harris also did not rule out the compulsory purchase of assets held by the religious organisations to fund redress for what he described as “endemic” abuse. Almost 2,400 allegations of historical sexual abuse were recorded by 308 schools run by religious orders across Ireland, a Government-ordered scoping inquiry revealed. The 700-page report said the claims were made against 884 alleged abusers in day and boarding schools run by 42 religious orders. In the immediate days after the publication of the report, gardai were contacted more than 160 times about similar allegations – some of which were the first time the individual had come forward.
Six Kilkenny institutions have been named in the report on allegations of sexual abuse at schools run by religious orders.His abuser is a former Christian Brother who is currently serving a prison sentence for indecently assaulting several boys decades ago. The 72-year-old has multiple convictions for the historic indecent assault of a number of boys at a primary school in County Kilkenny.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has confirmed that the Kilkenny City water supply at Troyswood is to be removed from their Remedial Action List following significant investment in upgrade works. The Remedial Action List identifies water supplies which require further upgrades in order to ensure full compliance with drinking water standards now and into the future, and the removal of Kilkenny City from the ‘at risk’ list comes as Uisce Éireann confirmed that its €33 million upgrade of the Troyswood Water Treatment Plant has ensured a safe and reliable water supply for homes and businesses in the city and the surrounding area.
